Are you the Director of your life or merely a co-star?

I've been thinking over the past few days what direction I wanted to take this blog in.  It will of course feature hair, makeup, clothes and things like that.  But I want it to be a little more.  Like I mentioned in my YouTube video - I'm a private person so putting all my business on social networks is not going to happen.  But if I have a thought or experience that I think someone may benefit from, I don't mind sharing.

My first thought for this entry was going to be on the importance of friends, but last night I got to thinking about my life and the direction it's been going over this year.  For the most part I direct my own life, don't get it twisted - God is my overall director, but I'm talking about what I do in my life on this earth.  I have to admit over the past few months I have been relying on someone else's decisions/direction to make something for me work and sitting back taking direction (co-starring) in my own life.

Since it has not been going the way I wanted it to go I see myself giving up and being down about it - and guess what???  That ain't me, and in the long run the only person being affected by this is me!  NOT COOL!!  It's important to set goals and allow help from others, but don't allow them to be the director of your life.    Because while you're waiting on them - they are doing their thing and guess what?  You're waiting and not living.

So step up and be the Tyler Perry of your own life!  (saying this to myself as well)

Take care

Getting back to it!!

Wow!!!  I can't believe I have allowed over a year to pass since my last blog!  So much has happened, so many changes.

LIFE!  That's what's been going on and a lot of it!!!  I'm hoping to get back into writing - I have posted a couple new YouTube videos - I let that fall by the wayside too!  Shaking my head at myself!! LOL!!!

I think I may change the direction of my blog and vlog a little bit.  I want to add a little more content, not just hair and make up!  Although those are 2 things I really love!  Maybe those + a little mind, body and spirit items.  I don't want it just become random all over the place posts!

So on that note - I'm going to exit stage left and get my thoughts in order for my next post!

Talk to you all soon!!!

So sorry So Long!!!

Hey Guys!!

I have been so very neglectful of my poor little blog!  I jumped on the YouTube bandwagon and have been making more and more videos.  It's so much easier for me to get in front of the camera and talk as opposed to sitting  down and typing!  Terrible I know!

Well what I am going to try and do is at least come onto my blog and direct you to my new YouTube videos.  I've recently done some hair product and makeup reviews.  Hopefully in the very near future I'll get a new camera and be able to do more tutorials.

My latest vids were regarding the new Cover Girl Intense Shadow Blast (shadow + primer) as well as my first set of mini twist!

Check them out along with my new Tip Tuesday videos!

Talk with you soon!!!

Moisture Moisture Moisture!!!

While in Texas last week I was having a conversation with a couple other natural divas.  We were talking about moisture and our natural hair.  Now we all know that is one of the most important, if not the most important things for our hair.  It’s funny when I was relaxed you wouldn’t catch me getting my hair wet, now it’s not a problem!
During our conversation my friends told me how moisturized my hair looked and how soft it was.  They said I should share what I do – so here it is!

I wash my hair once a week with Crème of Nature Argan Oil Moisture and Shine shampoo.  While in the shower I condition with VO5 Moisture Milk conditioner.  I’ve learned that I don’t have to spend a ton of money to get the moisture I need.  .99 cent ain’t bad!  I also put olive oil in my hair with the conditioner and comb thru it with a wide tooth comb – this is the only time I comb my hair.  I let the conditioner and olive oil set on my hair with a plastic cap for about 20 mins.
Next I cool water rinse the conditioner out and shake my hair dry.  While it is still pretty saturated I apply my leave in – Giovanni Direct Leave In, along with a little olive oil and vitamin E oil.  I comb thru any tangles I may have.

I’ve decided to stay away from heat in my hair for the time being so I band my hair and go to bed.  In the morning when it’s still slightly damp I take my hair down and apply my favorite thing!!  Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie!!  LOL!!  Then I go ahead and twist my hair.  Depending on what I have to do I may leave the twists in all day, either putting a head wrap on if I have to go out.  Or I leave it out if I am staying it.  It only takes about an hour and a half for the twists to set well for me.  I untwist my hair and rock my twist out for the rest of the week!!
During the week if my ends get a little dry I will apply a little more Shea Moisture to the ends when I twist at night.  So far I’ve only had to do that maybe once during the week!

This regimen has been working pretty good for me and my hair has remained soft and moisturized for the most part!  Don’t get me wrong, I do have days when my hair looks and feels dry.  But all in all I can’t complain!

Check out the youtube video I posted as well!

Hope this helps someone!!!

E.L.F Studio Powder Brush - My new love???

This isn’t one of my favorites in the series right now, but I’m thinking it will be very soon!

Yesterday, while shopping at Target for nothing in particular, I went to the makeup section as I normally do just to browse.   I ended up in front of the E.L.F Cosmetic display looking at their line of studio brushes.  I’ve been looking on their site for about a week at the brushes, but wouldn’t order them.  Call me crazy but I felt the need to hold one in my hand before I purchased it.  Anyway I have been in need of a new powder brush for quite some time.  The one I purchased from Sally’s last year has been broke for about half the time I’ve had it.  I went ahead and bought it along with a studio blush brush, tinted moisturizer and pressed powder.

I used it this morning and I must admit – next to my Sonia Kashuk slanted brush, I think this is my new favorite brush!!  It is one of the softest brushes I have used and it distributes my powder on perfectly!  I’m in love!   So far there is no shedding, true I have only used it a couple times.  But I purchased a brush a few months back from Rite-Aid and as soon as I got it home and used it there was so much bristle on my face it looked like I had a beard!  The brush also appears to be put together very well.  The brush I have been using wasn’t one piece and the brush part popped out shortly after I purchased it.  I don’t think there will be a problem with this one doing that.  The other thing I love about this brush?!?  It’s only $3!

For the price I don’t think you can beat it!

Healthy Hair Healthy Body Healthy Mind!

When I originally did my big chop it was for no real reason other than I wanted to start fresh and when I went swimming I didn’t want to have to worry about my hair.  As the months went on and I decided to let it grow out, I started to do more reading on healthy, natural hair.    While I know I still have much to learn I feel that my hair is growing well and it is healthy.  That got me to thinking…..I’m doing all this stuff (or not doing) to obtain healthy hair, but what am I doing to obtain a healthy body and heck a healthy spirit??

I’ve always been a full figured curvy girl and I’m fine with that.  I don’t want to lose my curves.  However, over the past year (ok, year and a half!), I have not been as kind to my body as I should be.  I had lost quite a bit a weight and was working out regularly and felt great, but lately all that has gone right out the window.  And as I get older I know it will get harder to get back into some kind of routine.  The thing is, I know what to do, because I’ve done it before.  Eat healthy and exercise.  I’ve learned not to say I’m going on a diet, because I know from experience that it has to be a lifestyle change, not a quick fix.  Also there is nothing I enjoy eating that I will ever give up completely.   I like sweets and am unfortunately a carb-o-holic!  So to say I’m never going to have another cookie or pasta is absurd.  I’ve done the no carb thing and saw great results, but let’s just say carbs always seem to find me!
My intention was to start my workout regime and change my eating habits last Monday, but I had a small set back because I’ve been sick all week.  I wasn’t able to work out, but I did start to eat better.  The illness helped out some with that too, because I haven’t had much of an appetite.  So I’m using that as my jumpstart!

Healthy spirit – I’ve been working on that for a while.  For me what’s best is to keep negative people out of my space.  Negative people, negative situations and all around bad stuff!  LOL!!!  As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that those negative people can bring all types of toxic energy into my life.  As a result of that I can get into some bad habits which affect everything positive I’m trying to do.
So my plan from this point on is to try my best to treat my body and my mind, as well as I’ve been treating my hair!

Who knew that a big chop could bring all this on??

Learning what works!

A short time ago I gave myself a honey and olive oil treatment and it did not go well! I had been doing them every couple of weeks and I was having pretty good results. This last time I’m not too sure what I did wrong, but it was a catastrophe! OK, maybe catastrophe is taking it a bit too far, but that is how I felt.

After co-washing my hair one afternoon I got out my honey and mixed it with my olive oil and put it all in my head. Put on my shower cap and sat down to watch a movie. Now in the weeks before when I did this I would leave it on for about 30-60 mins. This time it was for about 90 mins. I washed it out with my clarifying conditioner and did my normal routine at the time which was a wash and go. As I was putting my gel in I started to notice my hair felt stiff and dry. I rinsed again with my clarifier and started the wash and go again. STILL the same thing happened. Hard, dry and almost brittle feeling hair! I was sad. I went ahead and let my hair dry and it shrank up more than usual and remained dry. For days and days after that it was still dry and seemed like the texture had changed. I asked around on some of the message boards and nothing was working. I was to the point where I thought I was going to have to BC again and start fresh. I wasn’t too upset about that thought, but I just didn’t want to do that.

Finally I sent an email to my hair friend in my head on YouTube – deminpixie (she has great hair, check her out!!!) She advised me to wash my hair again with an actual shampoo (no cones!) and to do an alkaline treatment to normalize my hair. To do this all I had to do was mix a little baking soda with my conditioner and let it sit on my hair. Well the first time I did it my head started to tingle so I got nervous and washed it out about 3 mins later. But on the one section where I left it on a little longer my hair was soft and almost back to its original texture. So the next morning I decided to stop being a punk and put it all on my head, put on my shower cap and let it sit for about 15-20 mins. When I washed it out – my hair was back to normal! There were still a few spots where it was not normal but after about a week all was good! I was able to twist my hair and get my look going on!

When trying new things on your hair, whether you are natural or not, be careful! I read a ton of reviews and watched videos on honey and olive oil treatments and was like – well dang that didn’t work that great on my hair! Not that it was all bad; it could have been my error in leaving it in so long. Whatever it was I’m glad it was repairable.
Just goes to show – what works for one may not work for another!
